Monday the 12th of April marks the start of the second stage of the UK Government’s roadmap to get businesses up and running again. This week we will see the return of non-essential retail stores, gyms, leisure centres and outdoor hospitality.
At ECS Commercial Cleaning here in London, we know how important health and safety is during these times. This article explains the importance of keeping our environments clean as the country attempts to return to normality.
Use appropriate cleaning products for the task.
Disinfecting and Sanitising
Frequent and thorough cleaning plays an integral part in reducing the transmission of viruses. Ensure that you pay extra close attention to areas that are repeatedly touched, areas such as light switches, door handles, remote controls and other electronic devices. These areas are the likeliest to be crawling with harmful bacteria so it is important to remain aware of the surfaces you touch.
At the very least, you should wipe down frequently touched areas twice a day, with one of these times being either the start or end of your working day. Cleaning frequency should depend on the number of people in the vicinity. For example, if it is just you in the house, one or two thorough cleaning tasks should minimise the spread of bacteria. If you are in a busy office environment, you should be repeatedly wiping down surfaces throughout the day.
Kitchens and Canteens
Although COVID-19 is not known for spreading through food, it is still incredibly important to remain aware of food hygiene standards. Anyone handling food should wash their hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds before touching any raw substances.
Cups, plates, cutlery and utensils should be kept separate and for individual use only. Sharing any of these items could result in the spreading of the virus.
Bathrooms and Washrooms
In addition to the aforementioned facilities, bathrooms and washrooms also feature a lot of frequently touched surfaces. These surfaces will need to be cleaned several times throughout the day.
Wash stations should be provided with the correct antibacterial soap and disposable drying towels or an air dryer.
Ensure you have the correct PPE.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
The minimum PPE to be worn for treating a COVID-19 environment is disposable gloves, an apron and a face covering. Health institutions such as hospitals, general practices and hospices should all require cleaners to protect themselves and those around them with PPE.
